Life Saving
Courses
Pennsbury Townwatch also sponsors CPR courses and AARP's 55
Alive programs. Due to the popularity of the “55-Alive” Class, Townwatch has decided to bring the course back to Pennsbury Township again
this year. Produced by the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP)
and conducted throughout the country in two half-day sessions, 55 Alive
teaches preventive measures to use when driving that saves lives. Eight
hours of classroom instruction that refines existing skills and develops
safe, defensive driving techniques. The course is spread over two four-hour
sessions on consecutive Saturday mornings.
Beacon Safety will conduct an Adult and Pediatric CPR
program. The 2-hour course will be held at the Pennsbury Township Building,
10:00am to Noon. You will receive a 2-year internationally recognized CPR
certification upon completion
Life Saving Equipment
Through our
Outreach Program, Townwatch actively seeks ways to assist those public
agencies that service the Township in areas related to safety and security.
In 2004, we made a donation of an Intoximeter Breath Tester to the Avondale
Barracks of the Pennsylvania State Police – an item they use extensively in
their DUI program to keep our streets and highways safe.
Also in 2004
,
Townwatch donated a Lifepak 500 Automated External Defibrillator (AED) unit
to the Longwood Fire Department. The AED is designed to be used by first
responders to cardiac emergencies. This state-of-the-art unit determines
which shock is right for an individual, and ensures safe, simple delivery.
The portable Defibrillator was put into service the day it was delivered.
The unit will be used at special events as needed and will be kept on a fire
engine at all times for maximum availability.
The Pennsbury Township Board
of Supervisors has always been very supportive of our Townwatch activities.
Not only do they permit us to use the building facilities for our monthly
and occasionally our Annual Meetings, but the Road Crew, headed by Dave
Allen, places, cleans, repairs and replaces the prominent Townwatch signs
scattered throughout the Township. To repay the Township for these services,
the Board of Directors voted to provide an automated external heart
defibulator in the township building.
Camp Cadet
As you are aware, Pennsbury Townwatch works very
closely with the State Police as an extended set of “Eyes and Ears”. We do
our best to support their efforts in improving the security and safety of
our Township residents and their programs to educate residents and youth
about law enforcement activities. The program is a unique weeklong summer
program for Chester County boys and girls, ages 11 to 13, to give a better
understanding of law enforcement activities while living in an atmosphere
similar to a State Police training academy. Emphasis is placed on
self-discipline, building self-esteem and confidence through teamwork and
making new friends.
Campers participate in a wide variety of instructional
activities each day. They learn about firearm safety, radar, fingerprinting,
forensics, drug prevention, water safety, rescue operations, personal
conflict resolution but the program also devotes ample time to recreational
activities such as swimming, boating, fishing, basketball and other games.
Scholarships
To encourage the study of law enforcement
and community safety and service, Pennsbury Townwatch is pleased to announce
the establishment of a scholarship entitled the Pennsbury Townwatch
Scholarship for Law Enforcement Study to a deserving Unionville High
School graduate who is pursuing a career in law enforcement, forensic
science or criminalistics.
The scholarship consists of a one-time $1000
award to a student enrolled in such a training program. In May, a Unionville
High School Scholarship Committee selects the student from a list of those
meeting the selection criteria established by Pennsbury Townwatch.
The 2006
recipient was Ellana Schreep who is attending the University of Tampa as a
major in forensics science. The
2010 recipient was John Colven, Jr. of Bloomsburg Univ. of PA and will
pursue a degree in Criminal Justice with a long-term goal of becoming a
State Police Officer.
Chadds Ford Elementary
School
Pennsbury Townwatch in 2011 has made a monetary
donation for a First Aid Program.
PA State Police Barracks
Members of
Pennsbury Townwatch met on June 29, 2011 with the State Police at their
Avondale Barracks and donated a much needed laptop computer which will be
used by troopers to help with investigation of crimes. The Avondale barracks
covers Pennsbury Township for police protection. The group was given a tour
of the newly renovated state police barracks by Trooper Neely as well as a
demonstration on fingerprinting and an explanation of the day to day work
schedule for troopers. - Kathy Howley
